What category for a RYE PA

Post by mcgster » Wed Jul 02, 2014 3:02 pm

One of my favourite brews lately is a RYE PA with around 10% of the grain bill being rye. Its a great, sessionable beer that has around 65 IBU and 6% alcohol.

I wasn't brewing it to enter it into a comp but i love it and i'm surprised at all the people who enjoy it.

When i look at 6D it doesn't seem to fit, is this the correct category?

Nope, unfortunately, you have to enter it as a specialty beer 23A.

If it wasn't for the 65 IBUs, at 10% rye I'd say it's a 10A Pale Ale. Need a new category: Canadian Strong Ale, examples: BAB Pale and Mcgster's RyePA

I think they are in the process of rehashing the guidelines and there may actually be ways to have input.

I did submit this one in Category 23, i'm curious to read the feedback.

I really enjoy this beer and i will be sad to see the keg empty. I'm going to brew up a black rye IPA (IA..) next and might try submitting that in category 23 in future comp just for the feedback.
